Pub Crawler

Four Seasons in one afternoon

Pub Crawler raised its standards this month with cocktails (and a pint of Guinness) in a five star hotel.

Between Christmas and New Year there lies a lull, which was when we decided to spend a lazy afternoon in the Four Seasons in Ballsbridge. The Lobby Lounge is the kind of place I could spend an entire day in – totally alone, people watching and the like. This time, however, I had company, and we decided to splash out by having a festive cocktail.
And festive they were. I had a Christmas Delight, a delicious concoction made up of vodka, fresh cream and some other alcoholic substance. My friend went for the Sleigh Bells, a variation of vodka and berries and something else pretty toxic. Her husband stuck with tradition and had a pint of Guinness.
At €12.75 a pop, the cocktails were hardly cheap, but we were clinging onto the final days of 2008, when severe belt tightening wasn’t yet an act of patriotism. And besides, they weren’t massively overpriced either considering what other places charge. And those other places are not the lovely Four Seasons. Meanwhile, the Guinness was €6, which again didn’t seem astronomical considering it was still cheaper than ordering a pot of tea.
In between looking around me and eavesdropping on other people’s conversations, I had a read of the menu and was a bit flummoxed to see that a ham and cheese sandwich was a whopping €18. It would want to be some sandwich.
Still, you can kind of forgive them for at least two reasons. When you hang out in The Lobby Lounge, the staff wait on you hand and foot, topping you up with fancy nuts, and nobody would even dream of suggesting that you should leave, just because your drinks are finished. (The Westbury is equally as accommodating.) And secondly, the toilets are so fabulously fabulous that it’s well worth shelling out some cash in order to get a look.
