A site for sore eyes: Balcony makes Irish music look good

The Sugar Club played host last month (June 20) to Ireland’s funkiest music awards ceremony, which featured live music, ecstatic award winners and the general public who attended for the guaranteed entertainment. The Irish ‘Balcony phenomenon’ is literally bringing television to new heights and the BalconyTV Music Video Awards underlines how far the team from BalconyTV has actually come since officially launching in June of last year.
BalconyTV is a daily internet live music show that broadcasts exclusively from the apartment balcony of Pauline Freeman, Tom Millett and Stephen O’Regan. All are creative in their own way, with Stephen looking after their blog space and filming the balcony videos and Tom taking the role of the on/off presenter on the cult fan show. Meanwhile, Pauline is the musician, appearing now and again with her band Alan Alda.
In the time that has passed since its launch, BalconyTV.Com has featured bands, bellydancers, comedians, tango dancers, football free stylers, diabolo-ists, protesters, impersonators, puppets, and lots more besides. Some of the most promising up and coming musical artists in Ireland, including Leanne Harte, Ham Sandwich, Starturtle and The Flaws have featured on this website as well as more established names like Paul Brady, Eleanor McEvoy, Charlie McGettigan, Luan Parle and Declan O’ Rourke. BalconyTV has recieved critical acclaim from the Irish media, and the crew has featured on many radio, TV shows, and across the print media. The Star Sunday declared Pauline’s balcony ‘a web smash’, The Irish Times Magazine stated that ‘BalconyTV is becoming a cult’’ while HotPress called it ‘a boutique Irish music phenomenon and the Sunday Independent called it ‘Irelands zaniest TV station’.
To add to this fine praise, the site won Best Music Website at the Irish Digital Media Awards in February 2007, and was chosen to represent Ireland in the E-Entertainment category of the World Summit Awards backed by the UN. Last September BalconyTV expanded to Hamburg , Germany in the shape of BalconyTV.de. Presented by Johanna Leushen and Lars Kauffman, it’s based on a tiny balcony high above the famous Reeperbahm. BalconyTV shows are now being viewed over 100,000 times per month, and in November 2007 BalconyTV celebrated one million video views.
This rapid rise to fame culminated in BalconyTV’s recent awards ceremony. The highlights of the night included RoySeven, who opened the show and performances by the legendary John Spillane, the classically gifted Zoe Conway and John McIntyre and the energetic and popular Kinetiks with their rocking finale. The presenters on the night were Colm Lynch, Roddie Cleere from WLRFM, Lauren Guillery, Paul from RoySeven, Lars and Johanna from BalconyTV Hamburg, Leanne Harte and Una Mullally.
The extensive list of winners included Best Male: Keith O Brien, Best Female: Luan Parle, Best International Act: Apes in the Orange Grove – The Netherlands and Best Band: The Script.
BalconyTV is a must-see and for any prospective bands, the show is a must performance – www.balconytv.com.
